Sayeh Bayat, PhD
Director, Healthy City Lab
Assistant Professor, Schulich Research Chair
Biomedical and Geomatics Engineering
Schulich School of Engineering, UCalgary
I am a Schulich Research Chair and Assistant Professor at the University of Calgary, with joint appointments in the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Geomatics Engineering at the Schulich School of Engineering. I am also a full member of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and the O'Brien Institute for Public Health at the Cumming School of Medicine.
My research sits at the intersection of digital health, AI, and Aging, developing context-aware technological solutions for health that meet people in their everyday environments. Across our work, the Healthy City Lab studies how everyday behaviour — driving, walking, sleep, and the places people inhabit — reveals subtle changes in cognitive function, frailty, and brain health, and how these signals can support earlier detection, more personalized care, and better decisions for older adults and people living with dementia.
Beyond research, I serve on the editorial boards of Gerontology (Technology Section) and BMC Geriatrics, and as Programs Chair of the Technology and Dementia Professional Interest Area within the Alzheimer's Association ISTAART society. I am also a Board Member of the University of Calgary's Conjoint Faculties Research Ethics Board.
Prior to joining the University of Calgary, I obtained my PhD in Biomedical Engineering (2022) and my bachelor’s degree in Engineering Science (2016) from the University of Toronto.
